Performance Tours at the International Gallery

Thursdays and Saturdays, noon, within the exhibition. Tours begin at exhibition entrance. The International Gallery and Ripley Center are NOT at the National Museum of American History. Click here for Museum Maps.
Professional pianists specializing in various musical genres -- classical, jazz, traditional, gospel, and popular -- lead visitors through the exhibitions, talking about and performing on some of the historic pianos.

Lalezar: Turkish Music of the Sultans, Sufis, and Seraglio

This ensemble of soloists from the Istanbul Radio Orchestra performs Turkish music from the Ottoman Empire, including Sufi, classical, and popular music for ney (flute), kemenche (fiddle), kanun (hammered dulcimer), tanbur (lute), kudum (drums), and voice. This concert is made possible through the support of the American Turkish Council. Program takes place in the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Auditorium.

Pianist Jonathan Biss performs the Brahms Piano Quartet, op. 26, and Kirchner's Piano Trio no. 1, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Houtzeel performs songs of Borodin and Ravel, with violinist Catherine Cho, violist Brian Chen, and cellist Marcy Rosen. Program takes place in the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Auditorium.

Cynthia Adams Hoover, co-curator of PIANO 300, explores the important role of the piano in the lives of women and their families, especially in the 19th Century. Soprano Sarah Adams Hoover illustrates with music learned at her mother's knee — and since. Hiroko Yamazaki accompanies on the piano.
